We would like to discourage participants from driving into Oxford, as everything will be walking distance once at the meeting and parking is scarce. Please contact the organisers (sclss@physics.ox.ac.uk) if you think you think you will definitely need a car.
The bus service from Heathrow/Gatwick airports is called “the airline." It runs very frequently and takes just over an hour from Heathrow, two hours from Gatwick. You should pay with cash, in pounds, when you get on the bus (return ticket is £30 from Heathrow, £37 from Gatwick). From Stansted/Luton, National Express has a (not so frequent) service to Oxford: bus 737. From London, you can take the train or for a cheaper option, the bus (X90 or OxfordTube).
Although the bus is the cheapest option for individuals, it is also possible to take a taxi all the way from/to the airport, and this option may be cheaper for groups. In this case, it is recommended to book ahead, as the cost doubles without pre-booking. Costs for pre-booked taxis are about £65 from Oxford-LHR, and £75 from LHR-Oxford. If you end up at the bus station (at Gloucester Green) or train station, the department and most of the city centre is within walking distance. The map below shows the simplest walking route from Oxford railway station and central coach station to the Clarendon Laboratory. This is about one mile in length and should take roughly twenty minutes. Alternatively, the no.500 Park and Ride bus (usually green) runs from the station and stops at the intersection of Keble and Banbury Roads, very close to the Clarendon Lab.
